They’ve been voted ‘ugly shoe of the year’ in the Shiny Media Style Awards, but are revered as ‘the most comfortable shoes on earth’ by fans. These humble, comfy, ugly shoes are Crocs – and they’re an international sensation. Launched at a Fort Lauderdale boat show in 2003, Crocs are made from a unique closed-cell resin known as PCCR. The material is neither plastic nor rubber, but possesses anti-microbial properties, is non-marking and provides excellent non-slip grip on virtually any surface.
Crocs are available in a wide variety of colours and sizes to suit men, women and children of virtually any taste. The company aims to provide footwear for anyone who wants a comfortable shoe – and the sandals on offer are exceptionally popular with nurses, shop workers and others who spend the bulk of the day on their feet. The original Croc was a clog-shaped sandal with a strap across the back. Three short years of phenomenal growth later, the range is expanding.
Today’s Croc collection includes the original Beach sandal, as well as the Cayman, which is similar but a bit narrower and available in a wider selection of unisex sizes. Other takes on the Croc include: the Athens, a flipflop sandal popular with women and men; the flipflop-style Capri for men and women; the newly-released Crete for men and women; the subtle Cleo is most popular with ladies but also sized for men; the Endeavor, similar to the original Croc, for men and women; and the Islander and the All Terrain – both of which are more like ‘real’ shoes than sandals. There’s even a boot-style Croc, the Georgie, for those puddle-jumping days. The majority of Crocs styles are available for kids as well – and almost all the Crocs on offer are available in a variety of colours to suit virtually any wardrobe.
