Birkenstock Sandals

When it comes to comfortable sandals, there are few names in the world that hold a candle to Birkenstock. Founded in Germany over 200 years ago, the Birkenstock company makes a broad range of sandals for men, women and children. Though many associate the Birkenstock name with hippies or students, it’s fair to say the company has worked hard to keep up with changing styles and trends – today’s Birkenstock competes easily with a variety of other sandals on offer in the high street.

The basic design of every Birkenstock sandal stems from the sole. Carefully designed to provide optimum support and comfort, as well as durability, each Birkenstock sandal has a footbed designed to move naturally. This footbed is augmented by a stylish upper, usually constructed from leather – it’s the footbed that makes Birkenstocks comfortable, but the uppers make these sandals distinctive.

Popular classic Birkenstock sandals for women are the closed-toe Boston, the dainty Cozumel, the slip on Madrid and the Kairo. In Birkenstock’s other ranges, popular women’s sandals include the Papillio Salmanca and a number of custom Birks designed by Heidi Klum, including the gemstone encrusted toe-post Papillio Heiress and the funky single-strap Jade made from distressed denim and accented with silvery studs and cut-glass stones.

Birkenstock sandals for men are equally popular, though the designs aren’t quite so cutting edge. The iconic Arizona by Birkenstock is arguably the most popular men’s sandal the company makes, even after thirty-odd years of production. Other popular designs for men include the closed London, and the Milano. Virtually every Birkenstock sandal is available in a pint-sized version for kids – the added bonus is that the design boffins at Birkenstock know kids abuse shoes, so the majority come in the firm’s durable Birko Flor material.
